RIP Valeri Polyakov
Some
40+ years ago I had the honour to meet the cosmonauts Krikalev and Afanasyev.
Another I would like to have met, but never did, was Valeri Polyakov because it was he who held the record for longest time (438 days straight) spent in space (aboard the MIR).
From his work we know what we do know about the effects of weightlessness on the human body, about the effects of lonelyness in space etc etc,
The NASA picture above shows him (alone in the MIR) grinning happily as the US space shuttle Discovery manoevers around the MIR , practising docking to visit him.
You can read more biographical details here.
Polyakov died last monday, aged 80, in Russia, perhaps unusually in Russia, of natural causes. RIP, Valeri and a big Thankyou.

Name these scientists
Here are 13 famous scientists.
Can you name them all , left to right, WITHOUT googling them ?

Jenny (Ibiza) "Galileo, Curie, ?, Newton, ?, Hawking, Einstein, Sagan, ?, ?, De Grasse-Tyson, ?, Darwin." Okay so far.

Nope; Curie; Nope; Newton; Nope; Hawking; Einstein; Slurpy talking guy; Edison; Nope; Tyson; Nope; Darwin.
Where's Tesla? Slurpy was driving me crazy so I went to https://www.famousscientists.org/list/ and when I got to Sagan, I went AH HA!" Okay so far.
Petra (A) asks "Could #3 be Oppenheimer?" IDK, but I don't think so.
Infidel753 wrote in his blog that he got 9 out of 13, but didnt tell me which ones.

Rush ya
After last weeks look at Murika, it`s time to look at Rush ya, as in
Rush Ya off this mortal coil - in other words, Putin's hit list (so far this year).
Use Ctrl+ to enlarge this blog page if you need to.

GOOD GRIEF! And that’s just this year! Why would anyone with any money stay in Russia? Oh, wait. Putin will track someone down no matter where they are."
Just move to Ukraine; Putin cannot get there!
Anon wrote "Anatoly Gerashchenko, the former rector of the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI), died after reportedly falling down a series of flights of stairs on Tuesday"
If push came to shove, I'd take steps to avoid stairs.
Sunday news : Chief of "Putins favourite newspaper" dies suddenly in the woods.

Murika
Sunday saw the anniversary of the Al Quaida 911 attack on Murika.
Some memorial videos were shown on Yurpeen TV, but mostly it was superceded by (over-)coverage of the death of the UK Queen.
So I switched channels to see the coverage on Merkin channels. One pointed out that Chimpy subsequently started a war with a country
which had nothing to do with the 911 terrorism; very fair I thought as most of the terrorists were from Saudi Arabia.
Chimpy also robbed Merkins of much of their freedom with the socalled Patriot Act. ,
Another channel showed this photo below, which I had never seen before,
of the Twin Towers under construction in 1971.
But most US channels devolved into an overexpressed almost sickening over-patriotism, claiming (erroneously) that Murika is the number one nation , the greatest country in the world.
Many Merkins, high-schoolers, college students, MAGA hat-wearers etc etc have been brainwashed into believing this.
However, here is a US panelist with the REAL statistics of where Murika ranks, putting down a brainwashed student.
I ask my Merkin readers to watch that short video and then reconsider their beliefs!

I will agree that Murika has problems, however, there are a large number of people who would like to move here.
Most of them seem to be from Latin America, which is understandable given how bad things are there.
But now I wonder, are there other countries that are taking in more immigrants than the USA?" I think we take more Ukranians than you do???
Billions of Versions... wrote "
I thought I sent something already. Apparently not.
The US hasn’t been number 1 in much of anything for quite a while now."
Murika is still number one at their citizens shooting other citizens and their children, Mike.
Kurt (A) observes "On a recent US trip, I was shocked that there are multiple places in the US that can't even
provide clean drinking water on tap. Not just Flint Michigan either; I was in 3 towns like this." Fracking, maybe?

Charles the Third
Yesterday
Queen Elizabeth II of the UK died, just after PM Liz Truss - who years ago stated she was for scrapping the monarchy - shook her hand - which had turned blue as captured in HM's last photo.
The UK missed the opportunity of scrapping the monarchy and is appointing her first son as monarch. Oh dear; the end of non-interference.
His official title will be King Charles III, pronounced King Charles the Third, of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
I am particularly looking forward to the Irish pronunciation :-)

Apparently the theories are already going around. Eldest grandson started comprehensive school on Thursday.
Friday evening he told me his friend said Liz Truss killed the Queen after threatening to do it when a teenager.
I had to agree it is a big coincidence that she shakes hands with a well-looking Queen and next day HM is dead. " I think tis just a joke.
Anon thinks ".....certainly no Bonnie Prince Charlie!" True.
Schorsch (D) asks "Where did you find that B&W photo?" In an album of positive analog photos, labelled Marine Mammals, e.g. Prints of Whales?

No parachute jump
Mike had a couple of "jokes" in his blog
Billions of Versions...
yesterday, but they are both wrong. Viz:
"Skydiving without a parachute is a once-in-a-lifetime experience." and
"You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice".
So here's the photo that proves it possible :-
Here I was, about 35 years ago, way high above the clouds (about 10,000 feet amsl), in free fall, without a parachute.
All you need is a trustworthy friend to bring you one on the way down, Mike. And steel balls too maybe :-)

I’ve heard of people surviving when their chute didn’t open. That can be your next daredevil stunt."
I'm too old (78) now for that stuff; even base-jumping scares me now.
Jenny (Ibiza) wrote "You are crazy! How long did you fall?" Crazy? No, I was just foolhardy. Terminal speed is about 120mph, so 2 miles high translates into a 1 min fall.
But you get the chute on in less :-)
Schorsch (D) wrote "YOLT"
Horst (D) wrote "Photoshopped?" No. That's the original analog photo from way back then. Unedited.

Self-Education Poem
T oday I read an old poem by Rudyard Kipling
giving some tips about self-education :-
I keep six honest serving-men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who.
I send them over land and sea,
I send them east and west;
But after they have worked for me,
I give them all a rest.
I let them rest from nine till five,
For I am busy then,
As well as breakfast, lunch, and tea,
For they are hungry men.
But different folk have different views;
I know a person small—
She keeps ten million serving-men,
Who get no rest at all!
She sends'em abroad on her own affairs,
From the second she opens her eyes—
One million Hows, two million Wheres,
And seven million Whys!
Kinda neat, isn't it :-)
In other good stuff I read today, Sarah Palin lost her seat to a Democrat.

This blog is getting really unmanagable, so I've taken the first 12 years' archives offline.

This Blog's Status is
Blog Dewey Decimal Classification : 153
FWIW, 153 is a triangular number, meaning that you can arrange 153 items into an equilateral triangle (with 17 items on a side).
It is also one of the six known truncated triangular numbers, because 1 and 15 are triangular numbers as well.
It is a hexagonal number, meaning that you can distribute 153 points evenly at the corners and along the sides of a hexagon.
It is the smallest 3-narcissistic number. This means it?s the sum of the cubes of its digits.
It is the sum of the first five positive factorials. Yup, this is a 153-type blog. QED ;-)
