About
Stu Savory ;-) School report for Stu Savory
Eunoia, who is a grumpy, overeducated, facetious, multilingual, naturalised German, blatantly opinionated, old (1944-vintage), amateur cryptologist, computer consultant, atheist, flying instructor, bulldog-lover, Porsche-driver, novel- and textbook-writer and blogger living in the foothills south of the northern German plains. Not too shy to reveal his true name or even whereabouts, he blogs his opinions, and humour and rants irregularly. Stubbornly he clings to his beliefs, e.g. that Faith does not give answers, it only prevents you doing any goddamn questioning. You are as atheist as he is. When you understand why you don't believe in all the other gods, you will know why he does not believe in yours.

Oh, and after the death of his old bulldog, Kosmo, he also has a new bulldog, Clara, since September 2018 :-)

RIP Ulrich Hosbach

It has been a while since I have attended a funeral, only three times in the last two decades. Fritz, Anton and Markus. Now, sadly, another old friend has passed on. Uli Hosbach. Back in the mid eighties, I set up the AI team at Nixdorf Computer AG (now defunct). Mostly younger than I was (forty at the time). One of those youngsters coming on board was Uli, who was just 28 at the time. Now I am 82 and Uli has died last week aged 69. We don`t all go in same sequence we came onto this planet.
The funeral ceremony will be on friday mo(u)rning and his burial in the "Auf dem Dören" cemetary. Goodbye Uli, and thankyou that you were part of our team.

Fly the Union (Jack) correctly !

The British Union (Jack) flag is made up of the three national flags of England, Scotland and Ireland, as you can see here :-

UK flag
Note that it is NOT symmetrical! Look at the white diagonals. You fly the flag the right way up with the wider white diagonal on top, next to the pole. As usual, the pole is assumed to be on the left here.

Flying the flag upside down is "lese Majeste" (which means: insulting the Crown) , and is theoretically still a crime in the UK and its commonwealth! Find more details here.

The flag is really called the Union Flag. The word "jack" should only be used when the flag is flown from a "Jackstaff" ie onboard a ship. However many ('Merkins?) refer to the 1775 Grand Union Flag (used during their {Union vs. Confederate "Rebel"} Civil War) as the Union Flag, so I (incorrectly) use the term Union Jack here, to avoid their confusion.
Here ist the then King's Proclamation from 12th April 1606.

I recently got an Email asking about the "true" colours of the Union Flag. They are:-
Pantone --- WebSafe -- RGB------------------ CMYK
280------#003399----0-13.5-39------100-72-0.18 ---Union Flag Blue
186------#cc0000---85.9.11.7-13.8---0-91.76-6 ---- Union Flag Red

Another Email asked me on which days must the Union Flag be flown. They are afaik:-
Prince Andrew's Birthday = 19th February
St David's Day [Wales] = 1st March
Prince Edward's Birthday = 10th March
Commonwealth Day = 2nd Monday in March
St George's Day [England] = 23rd April
Europe Day = 9th May
Coronation Day = 2nd June
King's Official Birthday = in June [varies]
Princess Anne's Birthday = 15th August
Remembrance Sunday = in November [varies]
Kings' Birthday = 14th November
King's Wedding Day
St Andrew's Day [Scotland] = 30th November

Partial eclipse of the sun

This evening in Europe we get to see an eclipse of the sun. It will be about 85% covered around 20:10 local time tonight, so low in the sky. The track of totality will go through Siberia, Greenland, Iceland, and Spain so Jenny should get to see it totally. The sun is about 400 times bigger than the moon but is 400 times further away which is why we get total eclipses because they subtend the same angle. As the moon drifts away, about 4 inches annually, we will only get annular eclipses in the far future.
Here is a video I found on the web giving an impression of what you might see from eg where Jenny lives in Ibiza (a spanish island).

Eclipse as will be seen from Spain, also the Perseid meteor shower

And here is an older video for my US readers, taken in northern Texas when the totality was there, over Texas.

This is her photo which Eva sent to us.

Nagasaki Bomb Run, August 9th 1945

General Grove had ordered that the commanding crew member for the atomic bomb runs was not to be the pilot, but rather the weapon engineer, because he had practiced arming the bomb in flight (as a safety measure for the crew). For Hiroshima this was easy, just one switch, because it was a gun design. However the Nagasaki bomb was an implosion device and so needed 32 fuse cables attached. So the weapon engineer had to unplug 32 (green) dummy fuses and arm the bomb with 32 (red) high explosive fuses. All cables were the same length, ensuring all fuses exploded within the same microsecond. achieving the implosion. The bomb fell 43 seconds from 31,000 feet before exploding at 1,750 feet above the target, a munitions factory.

21 kilotons wiped out the whole town though.

PS for my US readers. Did you know that the US spent more money developing the B29 bomber than on the entire Manhatten project ? Why? The UK had offered to lend the USA a Lancaster bomber which had a bomb bay big enough to accomodate the Fat Man A-bomb.

This blog is getting really unmanagable, so I've taken the first 13 years' archives offline. My blog, my random decision. Tough shit; YOLO.

This Blog's Status is
Blog Dewey Decimal Classification : 153
FWIW, 153 is a triangular number, meaning that you can arrange 153 items into an equilateral triangle (with 17 items on a side). It is also one of the six known truncated triangular numbers, because 1 and 15 are triangular numbers as well. It is a hexagonal number, meaning that you can distribute 153 points evenly at the corners and along the sides of a hexagon. It is the smallest 3-narcissistic number. This means it's the sum of the cubes of its digits. It is the sum of the first five positive factorials. Yup, this is a 153-type blog. QED ;-)
